Apple Butter-Crisp-Rings

I made a couple of pint jars of apple butter from a recipe out of the cookbook, Just a Matter of Thyme. There was a recipe for an apple crisp but I had ran out of flour and butter. So my substitutes were olive oil and homeade oatmeal cookies. I added I think it was a 1/4 c sugar, a few shakes of cinnamon and lemon juice from a half lemon to the apples. I crumbled two or three oatmeal cookies over the apples and mixed it up as my substitute for flour, then I crum-
bled some oatmeal cookies into a separate bowl added a little sugar, a little olive oil and mixed it up and added it on top of the apples that I had in a baking dish. Than I baked it. Yummy! I got the dried apple recipe from the book, {Possum Living}. {Thistles}

Ants on Thistle

Can you see the ant? Not sure what the ants are doing up there on this thistle, but I do see little dots that look like eggs or something. Maybe they are going to eat the eggs. They are red ants. There is more than one but the other one is out of site. Quote: “Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.” ~Guru Nanak. This link to: {Eat The Weeds} I will eventually remove. Have you ever eaten thistles before? Check out: {Eating Thistles}

Blackberries & Bird ID

I forged for blackberries down by the pond today and made them into a freezer jam. I seen some new little ducklings while down there. I seen lots of these little birds. Do you know what type of bird it is? Click photo twice for a close-up. Check out: {Eat Weeds}

Dandelion Medicine

I really have enjoyed this book, Dandelion Medicine by Brigitte Mars, Herbalist AHG. I think it would be nice to have it on hand. Quote: The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.~ Henry Ward Beecher {B M}

Eating Thistles

{Plain Old Kristi} made a blog entry about Eating Thistles. I also thought you could eat the inside of the buds. I picked a Bull Thistle and looked up different info and what was written about it was that the inside of the buds taste like articokes. I cooked the one I picked and cut it open, but there just didn't seem like much of nothing was inside of it. I didn't eat it, but I did smell it though and it does smell like articokes. Makes a good green color in the cooking water. I wonder if that would be good to drink. Does anyone know? I also read that the flower petals were used as gum. Have you heard of this before? Tickled Pink

I spotted a couple of patches of this pink five petal blossom with yellow center as I turned away from the Elderberry bush I had just collected blossoms from. So I decided to bring a little of it home with me. Do you know what it might be? The other is Rabbit Foot Clover. Is anyone familer with either?

Pizza Dough

I found a recipe in my 1956 Betty Crocker's cookbook for Italian Pizza Dough that only uses 1/2 tsp of yeast in the recipe. I added a Tblsp of olive oil to the recipe because I liked a softer crust. I put the rest of the yeast in a canning jar for later use. I use to think I had to use the whole yeast packet. Sure glad I found the recipe. Have you ever eaten squirrel? It is in the recipe book also. How about frog legs? There are three frog leg recipes in an old 1943 Joy of Cooking book that I have. I've had frog legs when I was a kid. Do not think I've ever had squirrel though. Quote: After dinner sit a while, and after supper walk a mile. ~English Saying

Mosquito Repellant

{Natural Mosquito Repellant} At: {Wilderness College} the Vanilla Leaf pictured here in photo I took is mentioned as a natural repellant. I wish it was in bloom here. You can look it up online and find photos of it if you've never seen one be- fore. It reminds me of a bird. Eucalyptus is suppose to be a good one.
